The Yellow-bellied Watersnake (Nerodia erythrogaster transversa) is a medium-sized (up to 1 m [3 ft] total length) snake that is found across the southeastern US. New Mexico, where it is critically imperiled, represents the westernmost edge of its range. It can be found in a variety of aquatic and wetland habitats but will wander far from water, especially during warm, wet weather. The Yellow-bellied Watersnake will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Yellow-bellied Watersnake’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, evolutionary potential, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space and respond to climate change impacts.
