The Western Water Shrew (Sorex navigator) is a large shrew (12-14 g [0.4-0.5 oz]) with a black back and whitish front. It is often on slow-moving stream banks with vegetation cover and dives underwater to hunt for aquatic and terrestrial insects. It is the world's smallest mammalian diver. The Western Water Shrew will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Western Water Shrew’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, movement, life history, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space, persist in place, and respond to climate change impacts.
