The Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus) is a medium-sized (21-23 cm [8-9 in]) shorebird that breeds in the Rocky Mountain region and winters near the US-Mexico borderlands. It inhabits the open shortgrass prairie and is associated with prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) towns and other areas of short vegetation suitable for breeding. The decline of the native prairie ecosystem has caused population declines. The Mountain Plover will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Mountain Plover’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by movement factors, which influence its ability to shift in space. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its vulnerability score.
