The Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata) is a large (33-40 cm [13-16 in] long; 342-364 g [12-13 oz]) pigeon with bluish-gray upperparts, pinkish-gray underparts, a white band across the nape of the neck, and a band across the tail. It breeds and forages for seeds, fruits, and flowers in dry mountain forests of the southwestern US. This breeding population winters along and south of the Mexican border. The Band-tailed Pigeon will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Band-tailed Pigeon’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement, demography, and life history, which influence its ability to shift in space and persist in place. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its vulnerability score.
