The Abert’s Towhee (Melozone aberti aberti) is a medium-sized (21-23 cm [8-9 in]) songbird found in the southwestern US. It inhabits cottonwood (Populus spp.)-willow (Salix spp.) woodlands near water in desert areas. It is locally common but is vulnerable to habitat degradation because of its restricted distribution in the State. The Abert’s Towhee will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Abert’s Towhee’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to evolutionary potential and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to respond to climate change impacts. It is also impacted by other anthropogenic and biologic factors that could increase the effects of climate change.
