The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis carolinensis) is a large (100-137 cm [39-54 in] long; 200 cm [79 in] wingspan), stocky bird with a unique profile. It is gray-brown with a yellow head and has a very long bill and a large neck pouche. It dives head first from heights of up to 20 m [66 ft] into water to forage for fish. It occurs at lakes and reservoirs in New Mexico. The Brown Pelican will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Brown Pelican’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, movement, life history, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space, persist in place, and respond to climate change impacts.
