The Brewer's Sparrow (Spizella breweri) is a small (13-15 cm [5-6 in]; 11-14 g [0.4-0.5 oz]), somewhat pale sparrow with a clear-grayish breast and throat and a streaky brown back and cap. It has a faint facial pattern with a brownish line through the eye. It forages for insects in treeless brushy habitat and occurs in western Canada and the US and south into Mexico. The Brewer’s Sparrow will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Brewer’s Sparrow’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, movement, and life history, which influence its ability to shift in space and persist in place. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its vulnerability score.
