The Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Leucolia violiceps ellioti) is a small (11 cm [4 in]) hummingbird with a red bill and white underside. It is common in Mexico but uncommon in the northern part of its range in far southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. In the US, it is found primarily in woodlands near water at low to moderate elevations. It nests in sycamore (Platanus spp.) and occasionally oak (Quercus spp.) trees. The Violet-crowned Hummingbird will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Violet-crowned Hummingbird’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space and respond to climate change impacts.
