The Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii) is a small (10-15 cm [4-6 in]) songbird that breeds in the Great Plains of Canada and the US. In southern New Mexico, it is considered a nonbreeding resident. It breeds in shortgrass, native prairies and nests in a ground hollow that is usually overarched by grasses. The Sprague’s Pipit will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Sprague’s Pipit’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement, evolutionary potential, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space and respond to climate change impacts.
