The Sage Thrasher (Oreoscoptes montanus) is a medium-sized (20-23 cm [8-9 in] long; 40-50 g [1-2 oz]), grayish-brown bird with streaks on a whitish breast and a dark bill. It is related to the Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos leucopterus), which also has long, melodic songs. It forages on the ground for insects and in shrubs for fruit. It occurs in arid shrublands in the western US and parts of Mexico. The Sage Thrasher will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Sage Thrasher’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement, life history, and evolutionary potential, which influence its ability to shift in space, persist in place, and respond to climate change impacts. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its vulnerability score.
