The Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus caurinus) is a medium-sized (19-23 cm [7.5-9 in]) woodpecker that is readily identifiable by its bright red head, white belly, black back, and bold white patches on the wings. It is found east of the Rocky Mountains in the US. It inhabits open woodlands and catches insects by hammering in wood, hunting for them on the ground, and snagging them out of the air. The Red-headed Woodpecker (will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Red-headed Woodpecker’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by movement factors, which influence its ability to shift in space.
