The Purple Martin (Progne subis) is a large, dark swallow (19-20 cm [7.5-8 in] long; 45-60 g [1.6-2.1 oz]) with a relatively large bill and notched tail. Females and young are light below; males are dark blue and black. It forages for insects while flying higher than other swallows over open areas and water. It occurs in the eastern US and isolated parts of the western US and winters in South America. The Purple Martin (Progne subis) will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Purple Martin’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement, life history, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space, persist in place, and respond to climate change impacts.
