The Pocketed Free-tailed bat (Nyctinomops femorosaccus) is a medium-sized (10-11 cm [4 in]; 10-14 g [0.4-0.5 oz]) bat that can be found in the southwestern regions of the US, along with Mexico and some of Central America. It occurs in deserts, where it roosts in caves, crevices, and under rocks. The Pocketed Free-tailed bat is insectovorous, and its primary food source is moths. The Pocketed Free-tailed Bat will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Pocket Free-tailed Bat’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to demography and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to persist in place and respond to climate change impacts.
