The Pacific Marten (Martes caurina) is a medium- to large-sized (0.6-1 m [2-3 ft]) weasel that is found across the western US and British Columbia, Canada. In New Mexico, it is found in the Jemez, Sangre de Cristo, and San Juan Mountains. It inhabits dense conifer forests, especially spruce (Picea spp.)-fir (Abies spp.) forests. The Pacific Marten will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 Scenario and Moderately Vulnerable under the RCP 8.5 Scenario. The Pacific Marten’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, evolutionary potential, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space and respond to climate change impacts.
