The Gray-banded Kingsnake (Lampropeltis alterna) is a medium-sized (1 m [3 ft] total length), slender, gray snake with black and orange banding. It is found from southeastern New Mexico to southwestern Texas and into central Mexico. It is active at night and found in dry, rocky, desert habitats of the Chihuahuan Desert. The Gray-banded Kingsnake will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Gray-banded Kingsnake’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, demography, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability shift in space, persist in place, and respond to climate change impacts.
