The Cassin’s Sparrow (Peucaea cassinii) is a small (13-15 cm [5-6 in]) bird that occurs in the south-central and southwestern US and down into Mexico, with year-round residents, breeding season migrants, and wintering populations present in New Mexico. It eats insects and seeds and is closely associated with grasslands interspersed with shrubs or yucca. The Cassin’s Sparrow will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Cassin’s Sparrow’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to persist in place and respond to climate change impacts.
