The Canyon Towhee (Melozone fusca) is a medium-sized songbird (21-25 cm [8-10 in] long; 37-53 g [1-2 oz]) with a conical bill and is almost entirely gray brown except for a reddish wash under the tail. It forages for seeds, berries, and small invertebrates on the ground in desert grasslands and rocky and shrubby areas. It occurs in the southwestern US and south into Mexico. The Canyon Towhee will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Canyon Towhee’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by life history factors, which influence its ability to persist in place.
