The Bleached Earless Lizard (Holbrookia maculata rethveni) is a small (10-13 cm [4-5 in]) lizard that occurs in the White Sands National Park. It has evolved a light coloration for camoflage on the white sand. Its diet is not completely known, but it eats mostly small invertebrates. The Bleached Earless Lizard will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately low adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Bleached Earless Lizards’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, demography, evolutionary potential, and abiotic niche, which influence its ability shift in space, persist in place, and respond to climate change impacts. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its climate change vulnerability score.
