The Varied Bunting (Passerina versicolor) is a small (11-14 cm [4-5.5 in]) songbird named for its varied blue, red, and purple plumage (breeding male). The core of its distribution is in southern Mexico, but during the breeding season, it expands to northern Mexico and just across the US-Mexico border into Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. In southern New Mexico, it is found in dense mesquite stands and associated growth in canyon bottoms. It feeds on seeds and insects. The Varied Bunting will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Varied Bunting’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution and movement, which influence its ability to shift in space.
