The Suckermouth Minnow (Phenacobius mirabilis) is a small (6 cm [2 in]), widespread fish that occurs through much of the Mississippi River basin and in tributaries to the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. It is found in the Canadian, Cimmaron, and Vermejo Rivers in New Mexico. It inhabits riffles and runs in clear to moderately cloudy creeks and small to medium rivers with sand, gravel, or rubble bottoms. The Suckermouth Minnow will experience a high degree of climate change exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Suckermouth Minnow’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by life history factors, which influence its ability to persist in place.
