The Prairie Bee Fly (Poecilognathus scolopax) is a small (5-6mm [0.2 in]), brown and yellow bee fly that has occurred historically throughout the Intermountain West east into the prairie regions of the Midwest. In the last 50 years, it has only been recorded in Colorado and Bernalillo County, New Mexico. It is a parasite as a larva and nectivorous as an adult. As a pollinator, it is associated with several wild nectar plants, including the federal sensitive species gold blazingstar (Mentzelia chrysantha), royal gorge blazingstar (Mentzelia densa), and goldenweed (Oonopsis spp.).
