The Plains Minnow (Hybognathus placitus) is a large minnow (up to 9.5 cm [4 in] in New Mexico) with an olive-colored back, silvery sides, and whitish abdomen. It can be found in rivers and creeks with sandy bottoms. It scrapes algae, diatoms, and other microflora from rocks, snags, and plant roots. The Plains Minnow will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately low adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 Scenario and Extremely Vulnerable under the RCP 8.5 Scenario. The Plains Minnow’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to life history and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to persist in place and respond to climate change impacts. It is also impacted by barriers, land-use changes, and other anthropogenic and biologic factors that could increase the effects of climate change.
