The Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a medium-sized (20-23 cm [8-9 in]), thick-bodied songbird. It is distributed from Mexico to southern Canada in open woodland habitats. It particularly likes open habitats with trees and shrubs with spines and thorns, which it uses to impale its prey. It feeds on insects, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, and birds, sometimes catching prey as big as itself. The Loggerhead Shrike will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Loggerhead Shrike’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement and life history, which influence its ability to shift in space and persist in place. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its vulnerability score.
