The Gray Redhorse (Moxostoma congestum) is a medium-sized (0.5 m [2 ft]) fish that occurs in western Texas and downstream of Brantley Dam in the lower Pecos River and in the Black River of New Mexico. It inhabits warm, clear to somewhat cloudy, low flow rivers of small to medium size; adults prefer pools while young prefer riffles and runs. Its diet consists largely of immature aquatic insects. The Gray Redhorse will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a low adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Extremely Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Gray Redhorse’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution and abiotic niche, which influence its ability to shift in space and respond to climate change impacts.
