The Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi whitneyi) is the world’s smallest (12.5-15 cm [5-6 in]) owl that is distributed from the states just north of the US-Mexico border to southern Mexico. It lives in the desert habitats and woodlands of southern New Mexico, including riparian woodlands. It nests in snags and saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) cavities. The Elf Owl will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a moderately high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Less Vulnerable under both Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 Scenarios. The Elf Owl’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to movement and life history, which influence its ability to shift in space and persist in place.
