The Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus) is a small (13-17 cm [5-7 in]), sparrow-like bird. It breeds in southern Manitoba and Alberta and the adjoining northern states and winters in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and south into Mexico. It is associated with open grassland habitats and breeds in native shortgrass prairies. Wintering habitats are closely associated with shortgrass prairies and other open habitats, including sites that have recently been grazed or burned. The Chestnut-collared Longspur will experience a high degree of climate exposure and has a high adaptive capacity. Overall, it has a Climate Change Vulnerability Index ranking of Moderately Vulnerable under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 Scenario and Highly Vulnerable under the RCP 8.5 Scenario. The Chestnut-collared Longspur’s climate change vulnerability is impacted by factors related to distribution, movement, and life history, which influence its ability to shift in space and persist in place. It also has documented or modeled responses to climate change that impact its vulnerability score.
